9 o’clock Nasty easily made our ‘Top Acts of 2022’ list, so we were on the edge of our seats when we saw their latest single, Too Cool, reach the top of our reviews pile. Too Cool is out today; January 7, 2023.

Before we launch into how much we love this particular song, we must first let you know just how much we love 9 o’clock Nasty: a band we inexplicably warmed to throughout 2022 with each new release. There is a quiet confidence in their music: a brash and confident strut which makes you love them as humans, whether you like their music or not. True art is about how it makes you feel, and 9 o’clock Nasty never fail to make us feel something.

Too Cool is, in our opinion, a huge step up for the band, and an exciting development. They feel to us as if they are on an unstoppable trajectory. 2023 will be their year. If you’re already a fan of 9 o’clock Nasty (which you should be if you read our blog!) then this song will strengthen and cement your love for them.

Too Cool starts with an ear-catching snare fill and leads straight into an infectious funky guitar riff with bass lines that get under your skin. Returning briefly to another superb snare fill, we are then led into the vocal section.

For a band we’ve previously likened to Pink Floyd, it feels a bit odd to say that we were reminded of the Beastie Boys at this point, but that’s the charm of 9 o’clock Nasty – they keep you on your toes.

The song fills out with thicker guitars into the chorus and some great layered vocals. There are awesome sections here, with some spectacular use of silence, brought back in by a drum fill or a funky guitar moment.

The repeated line “too cool for school” gets in your head even more than the band’s “Rise Up” and you can’t help but be swept along here. We were reminded of Red Hot Chilli Peppers of the early 90s and Offspring throughout this track.

The guitar solo, reminiscent of Tony Iommi, has some cool stereo effects on it and is interspersed with the occasional vocal “hey”. Everything about the track is catchy as hell. If we didn’t have more reviews to do, this would likely be on repeat for the day.

9 o’clock Nasty have worked with a new producer on this track and it shows. This is a huge leap in quality. This track is easily the best we’ve heard from the band and we are so excited to be part of their journey.

As with all 9 o’clock Nasty songs, Too Cool keeps you gripped right to the end with a spoken “Ha, yeah alright” to close.

We love 9 o’clock Nasty, and their latest single, Too Cool, is bound to win them plenty more fans. A quality track which eats away at your subconscious, demanding you hit replay. I bet we won’t sleep tonight thanks to this phenomenal earworm.
