Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the debut single from Kingston (US) artist, Anjali Aurora. “Baby” is a gentle, singer-songwriter/ acoustic folk track which explores the period after a break up of a relationship where the person knows that they have made the right choice, but they still crave love and affection.
Aurora describes how this song came to pass after ending a relationship with an emotionally abusive fiancee. It was after this time that her insecurities faded and she was able to access the creativity that she’d always known was there but had hidden from herself. Way to make a positive out of a negative!!
The song begins on strummed guitar with Aurora’s voice joining the mix quickly. Her voice is engaging and fragile, but there is a determination in it which we found thoroughly endearing. Reminding us a little of either Leslie Feist or Silje Neergard, hers is a voice which demands to be heard.
The full band soon join the mix and you’re treated to some beautiful incidental fills on guitar. That all-important second verse drops back nicely and maintains interest. The addition of some piano fills and some emotionally stirring strings help to make this a particularly pleasant section to listen to.
An instrumental section washes over you without a definite lead instrument which then drops back again for a verse of just vocals and strummed guitar. The rise and fall in this track is truly dynamic and engaged us for the entire song easily.
From a production perspective, we think a cut around 45Hz would balance out the kick drum a bit and make the low end a little clearer. The acoustic guitar is resonating on the F# so a careful surgical EQ cut at 185Hz would reduce this peak and make the guitar sit better in the mix. A cut around 600Hz and another around 1kHz would reduce some slightly ‘honky’ and ‘nasal’ tones. Finally, a boost in the top 2 octaves would add some extra brightness and presence to the track as a whole.
For a debut single, this is a well-written and well-conceived track. Aurora has poured her heart out to her listeners and we have no doubt that her honesty in her lyrics and her heartfelt delivery will win her plenty of new fans. Add this track to your playlist today.
