ANNABELLA – LIAR, LIAR

Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to AnnaBella’s latest single, Liar, Liar, released today (December 29, 2022).

AnnaBella are an Austrian duo. Liar, Liar is from the duo’s upcoming EP, 4-Bitten Fruit. Liar, Liar starts with some lovely dreamy layered guitars with plenty of chorus on them. It is an inviting sound which draws the listener in immediately.

When the vocals come in, we were reminded of some of the female empowerment vocalists of the 80s: Toyah and Suzi Quatro spring to mind. There is an attitude of disdain in the vocal and it is delivered with conviction. You can hear the anger and venom as she sings of the wrongdoings of the “Liar Liar” in her life.

The rise and fall within the track keep the listener interested throughout. The heavier, rockier chorus stands up well and gets into your head after a couple of times around. The slightly tongue-in-cheek, “Liar, Liar pants on fire” lyric will stick with you long after the song has finished. The chorus is catchy and powerful.

The accompanying video for this single shows a determined woman, a dominatrix-like authority figure who clearly knows what she wants and is punishing her man for his misdemeanours: singing angrily straight into his face and keeping her hands firmly on her hips to show him who is in charge.

Ideas from our ears

A boost around 130Hz would thicken up the low end, bringing the bass into the mix a little more. A boost in the top 2 octaves would add some extra brightness as well as give more clarity to the vocals. This may increase some sibilant tones in the vocal track so a careful cut around 10kHz would help too. Another way to increase the overall brightness would be to use a single band compressor on the top 2 octaves with around 5dB of make-up gain. Ask always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Liar, Liar is a controversial alt-rock song from a duo who refuse to be silent and happy in every situation. AnnaBella’s hope is that this music will open a discussion about taboos which women normally only talk about behind closed doors.
