Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Blind Man’s Daughter. Kyhell was released on 23rd June, 2023.
For fans of melodic metal and progressive metal that focuses on instrumentation and intricate riffs, this is one for you. Blind Man’s Daughter is a melodic progressive metal band from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
Kyhell starts with dreamy and busy finger-picked electric guitar with repeated female vocals over the top. When the full band sound comes in, you can hear the strength of lead vocalist, Ashley Wolfe in her scream/metal moment. The guitars dominate the vocals in the heavier sections, but we found that the intricacies of the techniques in the guitar playing override any desire to make the vocals the prominent feature. This is a band that seems to be breaking genre rules, crossing influences and exploring melodic, prog and math rock, so to break another unwritten rule of music makes them all the more exciting.
In the more gentle moments, Wolfe’s vocals are clear and delightful. There’s a warmth and passion in her delivery which we found charming and exciting to listen to. We love the rise and fall in this track – the drums being used as a separate instrument, rather than as a simple backing to the guitars and vocals.
We thoroughly enjoyed the contrasting rhythm sections, and trade-offs between guitars and drums, and the musicianship of all members of the band is top-notch.
Your ears are so filled with technically proficient guitar riffs and exciting and creative drum fills, that drawing comparisons to the likes of Dream Theater goes almost without saying. This is music for guitarists to sit and listen to and bemoan the fact they don’t have time to practise!
Ideas from our ears
To our ears, a small cut around 250Hz and a small boost around 125Hz would balance out the low end a little. In some places, the vocals were a little lost behind the other instruments. Some volume control or even some ‘ducking’ might help bring the vocals forward. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
