What can we say about Chucky Trading Co that we haven’t already said?! A prolific artist that delights us every time he reaches the top of our reviews pile and one who is consistently producing spectacular music. The Scars Of Our War is a ghostly tale of love from beyond the grave and was released on November 1, 2022.
From the very first notes of this track, you are reminded that Chucky Trading Co is an artist who consistently delivers a quality product. Never repetitive, always intriguing, the quality of songwriting and musicianship is undeniable.
Starting with a dreamy collection of acoustic guitar sounds, CS Taber’s voice joins the mix and you are instantly transported into a musical theatre-style song with some definite nods to late 60s folk music. There’s some superb use of percussion in this early section. It is suitably sparse and ensures that your attention is focused on the voice and the storytelling
By the time an electric guitar and full band join the mix, we started to wonder if this was an early prog rock track that we’d somehow missed! We absolutely love how Chucky Trading Co are able to blend so many genres together so effortlessly.
The rise and fall within the track is, as always, entertaining and attention-grabbing and the chord progression throughout the track is an interesting one with a few unexpected twists and turns.
We love the build on strings and the simple organ solo with tremolo (possibly mandolin) panned left to accompany it. Everything about this track, once again, points to an artist who is carving their own, extremely effective niche.
From a production perspective, perhaps a boost around 75Hz would fill out the low end nicely. There is a slight resonance on the acoustic guitar at 205Hz so a careful cut here would help balance that out. A small but wide cut centred around 250Hz and a small but wide boost centred around 8kHz would to our ears balance the whole track out a bit more. As always, these are just some ideas from us. The songwriting and performance we have come to expect and love from this artist has certainly continued.
