Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Coconut Shy. Melbourne, Australia artist, Coconut Shy, released The Finest Day on 7th April 2023.

The song toys with the idea of what life might look like in the future, and the transition from pre-pandemic life. It is written in conjunction with his song, ‘Water, Water,’ which explores a different side of the same subject matter. Themes of nostalgia, friendship, inspiration, confusion, love, aspiration and loss reverberate throughout his sound.

The Finest Day is a gentle acoustic, singer-songwriter ballad. There is some beautiful stereo in the guitar tracks. The guitars are warm, well-played and inviting. Layered vocals join the mix and the song glides along, developing slowly with the addition of extra instrumentation. A tambourine and bass fill out the sound and a strummed acoustic joins the mix. Later, a gentle shaker is added in, and a kick drum, and it’s not until your reach about two minutes into the track that a full drumkit is added in.

The instrumental sections follow the vocal melody of the verses and repeat the simple patterns. This is definitely a song to wash over you while relaxing on a beautiful sunny day. We feel that this track is a superb candidate for a sync deal. It is simple and gentle without any sudden changes and could work perfectly as background music in a movie or TV montage.

We like the gentle breakdown section where much of the instrumentation drops out, and we like how the song moves from the breakdown into a more powerful section with just a simple quick breath in from Shy before launching back into that final repeated vocal line to close.

Ideas from our ears

A fairly large boost around 110Hz would help thicken up the low end. A couple of large cuts around 300Hz and 500Hz would help reduce some ‘boxy’ and ‘honky’ tones. A boost around 4kHz would increase the presence and definition overall. A cut around 9kHz in the tambourine and vocal tracks would control a peak there too, making it sound a little piercing and ‘brittle’. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

The Finest Day is a gentle singer-songwriter track with some very fine guitar playing that listeners will find relaxing and peaceful.
