CORAL PALMS – PROMISES

Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from London (UK) four-piece band Coral Palms. Currently based in London, the band consists of Ollie, Will, Adriano and Callum, who make a superb combination and create memorable indie rock songs. Their latest single, Promises, was released on March 10, 2023.

Promises was inspired by succumbing to the hedonistic temptations of a reckless student life and the inevitable confusion and heartbreak that attracts.

The song starts with some gentle electric guitar and an intoxicating rhythm, with a couple of delightful little harmonics notes before the vocals come in.

The lead vocals are charming and characterful. We always love being able to hear a vocalist’s accent in a song, and with Coral Palms, you are absolutely guaranteed this delightful touch. Some perfectly placed distant reverbs on both the vocals and the guitar give the song a genuinely mellow and relaxed start.

A harmony vocal joins the mix and helps build the excitement in the track. This feels like a song that the band has given considerable thought to, ensuring that the listener is thoroughly engaged at every step of the way.
Some gentle cymbals join the mix and feel a touch jazzy. The lead vocals take on a slightly Paulo Nutini feel in their delivery here.

When the full band sound comes in, we were thoroughly impressed with the drummer. There is some superb hi-hat work here, and gorgeous incidental guitars lead us to feel that this band will cause quite a stir. Every band member is highly accomplished in their role, and they play tightly together. This feels like a song which will work exceptionally well in a live situation – we especially liked the section at the end of the guitar solo, which almost felt like a fake ending before launching back into more awesomeness!

Speaking of the guitar solo… what class! This is a clean-sounding solo with a bluesy feel and some gorgeous note choices – an absolute delight to hear.

Ideas from our ears

This is a great mix, and it sounds spectacular. A boost in the kick drum around 60-65Hz would add some extra thickness and thump. Also, a small cut in the bass around 100Hz would reduce a slight peaking note there. A couple of EQ cuts in the lead vocal track in the 500-650Hz range would reduce some peaks too. The lead guitar in the solo maybe sounds a little harsh around 2.5kHz. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Coral Palms is a tight, ambitious and talented band poised to take the world by storm. This latest single, Promises, is a stunning example of fantastic songwriting and performance. We strongly urge you to add this track to your playlist today.
