Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Brooklyn-based artist, Couvo. Couvo released Why Do You Want on July 11th, 2023.

Why Do You Want is a critical look at our desires: politically and personally. It’s a deep question that appears far more superficial at first glance. We loved the lyric, “We crave too much, you say just one touch can change everything.”

Why Do You Want starts with palm-muted chugging guitars before attention-grabbing, gravelly vocals join the mix and steal the show. As the song progresses, more and more instrumentation is added and takes the feel from a close and intimate performance to an anthemic singalong chorus.

The chorus dives in with powerful belted vocals, and you can feel yourself being swept along in a song that you could be joining in with on a Saturday night in a Brooklyn club.

Couvo make good use of stops in this track to create a tension-and-release feel. The layered vocals in places too make this feel like “Stadium Rock” was the goal for this track.

The choruses are truly infectious and a real feature of the track. We love the difference between verses and choruses and Couvo makes great use of rise and fall here. The verses are intimate and personal, as Couvo draws you into their world.

Ideas from our ears

A cut just in the vocal track around 170-180Hz could reduce a slightly boomy peak when the vocal line is in the lower register. A few overall boosts around 900Hz, 5kHz and a high shelf around 10kHz could increase the fullness, presence and brightness respectively. During the heavier choruses, a fairly large boost around 250Hz would add extra warmth to the whole sound. Maybe using some additional instrumentation in this area could thicken up the track. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Couvo have created a singalong rock anthem that we feel has the potential to be a great summer club hit. Go check out Why Do You Want now.
