EARLY EDISON – TEMPTATION NUMBER TEN

Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Early Edison. Temptation Number Ten was released on July 28, 2023.

New York-based Early Edison say that Temptation Number Ten is a playful seduction song, rooted in the imagery of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. There are some clever lyrics in this track, along the theme of “nine times out of ten, the temptation is better than the sin, but I’m temptation number ten.” Our favourite lyric was “The Devil doesn’t have a key, he looks for open doors.”

Temptation Number Ten grabs your attention immediately. With a No Doubt (Just A Girl)-like keyboard riff, you can’t help but nod your head and be ready for a song that just oozes swagger and attitude.

When the vocals come in, it’s obvious the band are Tom Petty fans, and the song develops well with incidental guitar licks and background Hammond to keep the listener engaged.

We love the use of different sections throughout this track. There is always something to delight the listener, and the chorus is super-catchy, bringing you back frequently to that singalong moment.

We love the layered and harmony vocals in the middle 8 that builds to a superb breakdown that reminded us a little of The Joker (Steve Miller Band). Temptation Number Ten has many elements of different artists that we love – there are touches of early 90s rock (think Sum 41), whilst also having elements of earlier influences like The Kinks and Tom Petty. Early Edison make great use of a familiar chord sequence to make the listener comfortable, whilst adding in lots of variation (we love the use of shaker to the end) to keep you totally invested in every last second. The stinger ending is a nice touch, and makes you want to hit repeat several times.

Ideas from our ears

We felt that the vocal track gets a little lost in some of the fuller parts of the track. Some harder compression and perhaps a boost in the top end of the vocal track might help make them more present. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Early Edison’s latest single, Temptation Number Ten is a catchy, attitude-laden romp that will keep your attention from start to finish. This was our first introduction to Early Edison, but we’re hooked! More please!
