Here at the Send Me Your Ears Studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Jane N’ The Jungle, and boy, are we glad we did?!
Jane N’ The Jungle’s latest single, Wasteland was released on May 19, 2023, and is a powerhouse rock song that we guarantee to send shivers up and down your spine.
We previously reviewed Jane N’ The Jungle with their single, Raw As A Jewel – a slightly more punky track that we felt fans of No Doubt’s punk era would love. Wasteland comes exploding into your ears, and we simply cannot recommend it highly enough.
Wasteland is about being stuck in toxic relationships where you feel there is no way out. The song draws on your emotions, creating an atmosphere of unrest with rage-filled instrumentation and passion as the vocals stir and explode with tension that demands attention. Make no mistake: Jane N’ The Jungle are on course for huge things in their future.
Wasteland starts with dreamy guitars and atmospheric sounds of the wind. When the vocals come in, you cannot help but be blown away by their quality. As the song progresses, we found the vocal range to be awe-inspiring. There are some gorgeous reverbs and delays on the voice at the start, and some clever use of drive as the song progresses, giving it more and more passion as the message is conveyed.
There are moments in the vocals where you could draw comparisons to Kate Bush – especially at the start, but as the song develops, there are some definite “throwing everything at the mic” vocals that reminded us of Alanis Morissette at her best.
This is a truly driving and powerful rock song with emotional and thought-provoking lyrics (“Act like you mean it, don’t leave me hanging like you don’t understand”). The rise and fall throughout the song is a dream to listen to, and we were utterly enthralled throughout for several listens.
Every member of the band has a chance to shine – there are some amazing drum fills, especially leading into the chorus – and the guitar solo after the bridge is buzzy and exciting.
Everything about this track screams quality. We feel this is a song which would suit a sync deal. It feels like something that could be playing at the end of a movie where the girl escapes the bad guy and you see her walking away. Whatever happens in this track’s future, it deserves and demands attention.
Ideas from our ears
A small boost around 60Hz could bring a little extra thump to the kick drum and a boost around 12kHz would add a touch more ‘bite’ to the guitars as well and giving the snare a little more presence. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
Final thoughts
Wasteland by Jane N’ The Jungle is an outstanding rock song with world-class vocals and musicianship. We cannot recommend it highly enough and strongly urge you to add this track to your playlist today.
