Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Love Ghost. Payback was released on June 30th, 2023, and is a collaboration with SKOLD (Shotgun Messiah, KMFDM, Marilyn Manson and Motionless in White), who also produced the track.

Payback starts with ominous-sounding guitars and synth sounds that immediately made us all sit slow-nodding to the track. Unsurprisingly reminiscent of Marilyn Manson, the track also has a definite Danzig feel to it – both artists we love.

Payback is a song about revenge and redemption and the band throws everything they have at this scorching and soul-biting industrial metal/ grunge track.

Payback builds with an absolutely gorgeous thumping kick drum and as the song adds more and more instrumentation, the vocals take on a fuzz effect and add extra layers.

The choruses are heavy and grungy with some great layered rocking vocals. Super-catchy, this chorus will stick in your head for days!

Dropping back beautifully for the second verse with atmospheric sounds, single guitar notes and some perfect hi-hat work, this song takes the listener on a real rollercoaster of a journey of highs and lows.

We are always impressed with whatever Love Ghost release. They have a real skill of picking just the right artists to collaborate with to get the exact right feel for each song, and their attention to detail in every aspect of their musical journey will stand them in excellent stead for a lengthy career.

Ideas from our ears

The synth bass is a little heavy around 30Hz and 50Hz so some careful EQ cutting here could help it fit a little better. Also, the drum overheads may be a little heavy around 5-6kHz giving the hi-hats a slightly ‘shashy’ sound. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Already performing and releasing music worldwide, Love Ghost are impossibly ambitious and it is truly paying off. A band that many artists could learn from.
