Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Matt DeAngelis. Speak For A Moment was released on 28th July 2023, and if you’re looking for outstanding quality 70s-style rock – we have you covered here.

Speak For A Moment was written to exemplify Matt’s determination to live in the present and fulfil his desire to make a difference in the world. As Matt says, “There is limited time for us to do so, being how abrupt and exponential life truly is. I believe that everyone carries the potential to change the world for the better, but one must speak and break their silence for that potential to be unlocked.” It is a sublimely positive song in a predominantly negative world.

Speak For A Moment grabs your attention from the very first second, with a triumphant full-band sound. There were touches of It Bites (You’ll Never Go To Heaven), there were moments of Elton John (Funeral For A Friend) and even a hint of the piano in Bonnie Tyler’s, Holding Out For A Hero. If you love 70s rock, then this track is going to hit you in all the feels!!

When Matt’s vocals come in, there are moments of Elton John, perhaps, whilst still carrying a style all of his own. The vocals are effortlessly delivered and the falsetto moments are a joy to listen to.

We love the changes in tempo throughout the track, and the use of tambourine to accentuate different sections is exquisite. This is such a catchy track! If you love Musical Theatre (think Jesus Christ Superstar or Tommy) then we really can’t recommend this highly enough. Honestly – it feels like a hidden track from an early Elton John album. This really does have everything needed to tick every single one of our “we love this” boxes.

Ideas from our ears

A small cut centred around 1kHz and a larger boost centred around 5-6kHz would balance the mids and high mids out a little. A larger high shelf boost (maybe 8dB?) set around 10kHz would help improve the brightness and presence as well as overall ‘life’ in the track. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
