ROISIN O’HAGAN – I RAN (SO FAR AWAY)

Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Essex UK artist, Roisin O’Hagan. The single, I Ran (So Far Away), was released on June 30th, 2023.

Roisin O’Hagan’s, I Ran (So Far Away), is a faithful representation of the Flock of Seagulls original version of this track. O’Hagan gives the track a feminine touch with her Kim Wilde-like vocals.

The track grabs your attention straight away with 80s-infused drums and synths and incidental guitar fills. The vocals are confident and are the clear focus of the track. There are definite 80s stylings in O’Hagan’s delivery, and this style of music is a great fit for her voice.

O’Hagan decided to record this cover as a change of direction from her previously more country-leaning releases. She sees this track as a stepping stone to introduce her music to new fans, outside of the Country genre.

Fans of Flock of Seagulls will hear the faithful representation here, and appreciate the attention to detail in the drum patterns, incidental guitar and use of synths to create an authentic 80s sound.

Ideas from our ears

A cut around 110Hz to reduce some boominess and another around 250Hz for some muddy tones would help make the track a little clearer. A cut around 600Hz would control some slightly ‘boxy’ and ‘honky’ peaks too. Lastly, a high shelf boost set around 8kHz would increase the top-end brightness, particularly present in 80s music. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

Fans of 80s rock and pop will be delighted to hear this popular single with a female take. We hope it introduces O’Hagan’s versatility to a whole new audience and look forward to hearing her pop-inspired originals in the future.
