Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from another favourite of ours, Romain Gutsy. I’m James Bond is a track from his latest album, Numero 2, released on April 24th, 2023.
Gutsy has surpassed himself with this tongue-in-cheek song. We always love Gutsy’s music: with his gravelly vocals and wit, he always manages to win fans with a simply stunning take on European Folk.
Romain Gutsy, in his own words, is crazy! In this song, he believes that he is James Bond. He tells the spy’s story as if it were his, alternating the James Bond theme tune with a ska verse that triggers dancing impulses. The verse looks like a chorus and the chorus looks like a verse, the chorus starts the song and the verse finishes it. And why not break the rules when you’re so good at it?!
The James Bond theme tune is evident in the instrumental section at the beginning. It is subtle, but it’s there. The four-on-the-floor drums move the song along and the changes up in rhythms to create the occasional ska/reggae sections make for a fun listen.
We love the horn section and the interesting effects created by several different instruments. The tongue-in-cheek humour is evident throughout and the joyful and triumphant choruses make a wonderful contrast, with the horn sections adding to the joviality and wit.
Never let it be said that Gutsy’s music isn’t original and quirky.! We’re unsure if we’ve ever heard anything like it, but that’s not a bad thing! There is something so unique and endearing about Gutsy and his music that we are always thrilled to see his name reach the top of our reviews pile.
The spoken word section right at the very end of the song made us all laugh out loud! We won’t ruin it for you – we just recommend you take a listen to this charming little ditty right now. You won’t be disappointed!
Ideas from our ears
A hi-pass filter at 40Hz would remove some unnecessary low-end rumble. A small but fairly wide boost centred around 3kHz could enhance the character in that area, bringing the vocals a little further forward. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
Final thoughts
Romain Gutsy is who he is! He is unique, quirky, charming and talented. We just love this guy, and the fact that he consistently creates music that makes us smile makes for a big bonus. Fans of ska, European folk and “Folktronica” will just love this.
