Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Romain Swan. Regular readers will recall our review of Romain’s single, Call Me The Devil, and will no doubt be excited to hear his latest single, We Will Win For Once, which is due out today, 23 June 2023.

Paris-based Romain Swan grabbed our attention earlier in the year with his collaboration with Samer Elnahhal (Ex Lordi – 2006 Eurovision Song Contest Winners). We Will Win For Once is the latest single and is an exciting euro-pop/rock crossover that grabbed our attention.

We Will Win For Once brings the listener in with some synth-like guitars before building with extra guitars which then lead into an almost dystopian feeling heavy rocking riff. The drums are beautifully mixed in here, and we just love the offbeat synth in the introduction.

We Will Win For Once makes absolutely superb use of stops for a great tension/release feel and to really grab the listeners’ attention. The layered vocals give the song a poppy feel and create a fascinating dynamic with the heavier rocky instrumentation. On paper, it feels as though it shouldn’t work, but it really does! And that’s what we love about artists who cross genres so effortlessly.

We love the change of rhythms in the chorus, and at times the song takes on a Muse-like feel. The effects on the vocals are sparing and well-placed, creating and maintaining interest throughout. Vocally, perhaps a little like Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins).

An instrumental section with a very simple repeated line on the guitar works tremendously and maintains interest easily by changing up the rhythms behind the guitar. The use of sections really is masterful in this track, and keeps the listener excited and engaged throughout.

Ideas from our ears

There is a great balance of sound throughout this track. To our ears, a small but wide boost right through the middle frequencies centred around 700Hz-1kHz could help give the track a fuller sound and may bring out the vocal a touch more. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

We Will Win For Once by Romain Swan is out today. A superbly well-considered mix of commercial pop and metal which seriously impressed us. Recommended!
