Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Sean Kennedy. Kennedy, from New York, US, released Another Life on April 14th 2023 hot on the heels of his positive love song, Memory.
Another Life is an emotional, triumphant and positive soft rock/pop song about having the belief that you will one day cross paths again with an ex with whom you feel things perhaps shouldn’t have ended.
Another Life grabs your attention immediately with a positively euphoric start to the song and layers of synths and strings sounds. The instrumentation drops back for Kennedy’s vocals to take centre stage, and his voice is warm and intimate: a little fragile and soul-bearing in the lyrical content.
The drums are reminiscent of a Britpop style and the rise and fall within this track is performed superbly with choirs of subtle harmonies added in the choruses and pads and synths with modern sounds making the song sound current and fresh.
Another Life is a taster of Kennedy’s forthcoming fourth full-length album, Forever Us, and a testament to his commitment to his career in music.
The chorus is super-catchy and you’ll find yourself singing along. Kennedy’s voice is charming and endearing. The vocal is very close and intimate in the breakdown and we absolutely loved the note at the end of the breakdown: an unexpected note that didn’t resolve. It seemed like the perfect choice of note for the theme of the song, musically illustrating the same unresolved feeling that the lyrics display. Superb stuff!
Ideas from our ears
A small cut low-shelf cut around 150Hz and a small high shelf boost around 4kHz would balance out the lows and highs a touch. A small cut centred around 800-900Hz could reduce some ‘honky’ tones too. Finally, a light compressor/limiter with maybe 5dB of make-up gain would help add a little extra warmth and volume. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
Sean Kennedy is a young artist with an already impressive repertoire of heartfelt and passionate songs that are guaranteed to win him new fans wherever he plays. An impressive and well-written addition to his fast-developing catalogue.
