Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the debut single from Brighton-based Suzanne Gailey. Epilogue was released on March 10th, 2023. The song is an ominous warning that the planet is dying and we are not doing enough to save it.

Suzanne hails from Brighton, UK. She mainly writes and performs with her acoustic
guitar. She was joined on this track by Nick Williams on piano, bass and Rhodes piano.

Epilogue is a simple singer-songwriter track that is guitar-led. The song starts with strummed acoustic guitar, which is a pattern that continues throughout the track. As the song progresses, there are some long droning keys notes that fill out the sound in the background.

Suzanne’s vocals are clear in the mix. Her voice tells a chilling reminder that we should be taking better care of Planet Earth. Vocally sounding a little like Belinda Carlisle, the mood of the song is foreboding and dark. It forces you to listen to the lyrics, and we can imagine this is a song which works well in a “listening audience” live situation. We could imagine this song building well using a looper pedal and delighting audiences.

A Rhodes piano fills in some extra frequencies in the choruses, adding in delicate little incidental lines between vocal lines.

Epilogue has some wonderful subtle and unexpected harmony lines added in places. Not the usual and predictable choruses, but more randomly on selected lines. This works stunningly well and brings the listener in, giving them some extra interest.

We can see this track being perfect for sync licensing for placement in a TV show or movie montage scene. Its repeated chord sequence, very gentle progression and stinger ending are perfect for sync, and we would strongly urge Suzanne to seek out opportunities in order to bring more fans to her music.

Ideas from our ears

There is a slight resonance on the acoustic guitar on the G note so a careful EQ cut at 196Hz would help reduce a slight peak there. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears

Final Thoughts

Epilogue is a promising debut single from Brighton’s Suzanne Gailey. A grassroots singer-songwriter whose music is thought-provoking and passionate. We’re looking forward to hearing what she creates next.
