Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from The Pulltops. With You was released on September 29, 2023, and if you’re looking for some divine 80s nostalgia, this track will be right up your street!

We’ve been constantly impressed by the Pulltops, with their 80s electronica styles and Gary Numan nuances in the vocals, we were excited to see them reach the top of our reviews pile today.

With You is, quite simply, awesome! We love it. Starting with an abundance of synths and electronica, the song swiftly moves into the vocal section which reminded us a little of the Flying Pickets – especially when the harmonies join the second verse.

We love the huge sounding distant and thunderous use of toms throughout this track, and the addition of a shaker (as well as the extra harmonies) help the song to easily maintain the listener’s interest.

The rise and fall within the track is exciting, and we particularly love the use of gentle picked guitar in the more sparse sections of the song. The use of delays and reverbs on the vocals are just perfect for this genre, and give plenty of authenticity to the sound. There were moments we were very much reminded of REO Speedwagon in this track – it feels like the perfect blend of 80s electronica and poppy rock that was so hugely popular at the time – and still should be!

With huge hooks and a real head-nodding feel-good vibe, this track is our favourite so far from the Pulltops. A powerful and emotional song lyrically, which takes the listener on a journey that most love ballads would only dream to achieve.

Ideas from our ears

A cut around 200Hz in the lead vocal track would reduce some slightly ‘boomy’ peaks in the more exposed sections. A wider boost centred around 10kHz would give the track some extra brightness and a touch more of that 80s brilliance. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts

The Pulltops latest single, With You, is a hit in the making. A stunning display of 80s electronica nostalgia combined with gloriously huge modern production. Highly recommended.
