Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Southend (UK) favourites of ours, The Trusted. Doomsday was released on June 16, 2023 and is a song about everything falling apart. Lead vocalist, Tom Cunningham, talks of living in a world on the brink of war. Doomsday is a more personal Armageddon that we all live with – our own built-in clock that our minds can take to breaking point.
We’ve loved everything we’ve heard from The Trusted so far, and Doomsday is no different here. Clever, thought-provoking lyrics take centre stage;
I heard the world, was ending
I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel
We’re playing poker with our demons
But I’ve got nothing left to steal
Doomsday comes straight in with a full rock band sound. We love the panning stereo vocals at the start that just grab your attention and run with it. The drums and bass fit perfectly with the rhythm of the guitar and you can instantly hear just how tight this band is – we’d love to see them perform live!
The verses drop back perfectly to a bass-led feel with some great fuzz on the vocals. The Trusted have once again achieved an anthemic feel in this track with their superb use of tension and release in the build to each chorus. We particularly love the use of a stop down to mono at the end of the final chorus. Everything helps to rise and fall this track perfectly and the soundscape in our ears was truly dynamic.
The effects used on the guitars give the song a synth-like feel which works really well in this track. The song is a burst of energy and a wall of sound that demands to be listened to.
We love the tremolo effects on the guitar during the instrumental section and the fact the song has a stinger ending makes it feel all the apocalyptic – as if to demonstrate that none of us know when our time is up.
Ideas from our ears
To our ears, the track could use a small cut in the overall low end. Maybe a shelf cut set around 150Hz would balance the track out a touch. There is also some occasional ‘harshness’ around 2kHz in places so a small cut here could help too. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.
Final thoughts
The Trusted are creating consistently impressive stadium-worthy rock that should be grabbing the ears of rock fans everywhere. Get on The Trusted bandwagon now!
