TOM CRAVEN – LET IT FALL (MY DECEMBER)

Here at the Send Me Your Ears studio today, we’ve been listening to the latest single from Milton Keynes (UK), Tom Craven. Let It Fall (My December) is released today, February 3rd, 2023.

Recorded remotely with a full band of musicians across the UK during 2021, Let it Fall (My December) is the first track to be released from Craven’s forthcoming album.

Let it Fall (My December) hopes for a brighter future. It is a war cry and a statement of independence from years of negativity. It is a positive feeling song about finding our feet in an uncertain world.

Let It Fall tantalises you with a quick country-style guitar lick before coming in with the full band sound. There are some lovely fills on both piano and guitar and there’s an almost anthemic optimism to the song.

We love the use of Hammond to fill in gaps in the sound and keep the listener thoroughly engaged in the track. There are layered vocals in the chorus, but they are so subtle that you really have to listen hard for them. To the average listener, it could sound as if the vocalist is just a touch more powerful in these sections.

An organ solo takes the song into the realms of rock blues for a second with some lovely bluesy note choices before leading into a breakdown section which consists of mainly vocals and drums with the organ droning away in the background. Leading into a brief four-on-the-floor section before exploding back in with the chorus, this is a song that makes great use of sections and rise and fall to maintain interest.

There is a great instrumental section to close the song out, with every instrument being given plenty of space and separation in the mix, before closing on a long-held organ note. This is truly a positive vibes song and one which is both exhilarating and upbeat.

Ideas from our ears.

A boost at 90Hz would thicken up the kick drum, giving it a fuller ‘thumpier’ sound. A cut around 250Hz and another around 500Hz would reduce some ‘muddy’ and ‘honky’ tones too. A wide boost across the high mids and highs centred around 12kHz would increase the clarity and presence in the track and finally an additional high shelf boost at 12kHz for added ‘zing’. As always, these are just some ideas from our ears.

Final thoughts
